Mechanism

Zopiclone enhances the activity of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) at GABA-A receptors, producing sedative and hypnotic effects. It reduces neuronal excitability, thereby promoting sleep onset and maintenance.

Pharmacokinetics

  • Absorption: Rapidly absorbed after oral administration; peak plasma concentration within 1.5–2 hours.
  • Distribution: Widely distributed; moderate protein binding.
  • Metabolism: Extensively metabolized in the liver via CYP3A4.
  • Elimination: Excreted in urine as metabolites.
  • Half-life: Approximately 5 hours.
