Voglibose

Tablet

Voglibose is an alpha-glucosidase inhibitor. It delays glucose absorption in the intestine by inhibiting enzymes responsible for carbohydrate breakdown, thereby reducing postprandial blood glucose spikes in type 2 diabetes patients.

Mechanism

Voglibose inhibits intestinal alpha-glucosidase enzymes, delaying carbohydrate digestion and absorption. This reduces postprandial hyperglycemia and improves overall glycemic control in type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Pharmacokinetics

  • Absorption: Minimally absorbed; acts locally in the gut.
  • Distribution: Negligible systemic distribution.
  • Metabolism: Limited hepatic metabolism.
  • Elimination: Excreted unchanged in feces.
  • Half-life: Short, local intestinal activity.

Side Effects

  • Flatulence
  • Abdominal discomfort
  • Diarrhea
  • Rare: elevated liver enzymes

Contraindication

  • Hypersensitivity to Voglibose
  • Severe gastrointestinal disorders (e.g., inflammatory bowel disease, obstruction)
  • Pregnancy and lactation — use cautiously

Interaction

  • Other antidiabetics: Additive hypoglycemic effect with sulfonylureas or insulin.
  • Digestive enzyme preparations: May reduce efficacy.

Warning and Precautions

  • Monitor blood glucose regularly to avoid hypoglycemia when combined with other agents.
  • Advise patients to avoid excessive alcohol intake.
  • Take with meals to maximize efficacy.

Dosage

As directed by the Physician.
