Tranexamic Acid + Etamsylate

Tablet

This fixed-dose combination provides dual hemostatic action. Tranexamic Acid, an antifibrinolytic, prevents breakdown of blood clots, while Etamsylate enhances platelet adhesion and capillary resistance. Together, they reduce excessive bleeding in gynecological, surgical, and capillary fragility conditions.

Mechanism

Tranexamic Acid: Competitively inhibits plasminogen activation → prevents fibrin degradation → stabilizes blood clots.
Etamsylate: Enhances platelet adhesion and capillary resistance → reduces capillary bleeding.

Pharmacokinetics

  • Tranexamic Acid Absorption: Rapidly absorbed orally; peak plasma levels in 3 hrs.
  • Etamsylate Absorption: Rapidly absorbed orally; peak plasma levels in 1–2 hrs.
  • Distribution: Tranexamic Acid widely distributed; Etamsylate concentrates in capillaries.
  • Metabolism: Tranexamic Acid minimally metabolized; Etamsylate metabolized hepatically.
  • Excretion: Tranexamic Acid via urine; Etamsylate via urine and bile.
  • Half-life: Tranexamic Acid ~2–3 hrs; Etamsylate ~8 hrs.

Side Effects

  • Nausea, vomiting
  • Dizziness
  • Hypotension (rare)
  • Allergic reactions (rare)

Contraindication

  • Active thromboembolic disease
  • Hypersensitivity to Tranexamic Acid or Etamsylate
  • Severe renal impairment

Interaction

  • Anticoagulants (warfarin, heparin) may reduce efficacy
  • Hormonal contraceptives ↑ risk of thrombosis
  • Other antifibrinolytics may potentiate effect

Warning and Precautions

  • Monitor coagulation profile in long-term use
  • Use cautiously in patients with thromboembolic risk
  • Discontinue if allergic reaction occurs
