Mechanism

Spironolactone competitively inhibits aldosterone at mineralocorticoid receptors in the distal renal tubules. This reduces sodium reabsorption and water retention while conserving potassium. It also has anti-androgenic effects by blocking androgen receptors and inhibiting testosterone synthesis.

Pharmacokinetics

    Side Effects

    • Nausea
    • Hyperkalemia
    • Gynecomastia
    • Menstrual irregularities
