Nortriptyline

Tablet

Nortriptyline is a tricyclic antidepressant (TCA) used for the treatment of depression and neuropathic pain. It works by restoring the balance of neurotransmitters in the brain, improving mood and reducing pain perception. It is widely used in chronic pain management and nerve-related disorders due to its dual benefit.

Mechanism

Nortriptyline inhibits the reuptake of norepinephrine and serotonin in the central nervous system, increasing their levels and enhancing neurotransmission. In neuropathic pain, it modulates pain pathways by enhancing descending inhibitory pathways in the spinal cord, reducing pain signal transmission. It also exhibits mild anticholinergic and sedative effects, contributing to improved sleep and pain relief in chronic conditions.
