Nitrazepam

Tablet

Nitrazepam is a benzodiazepine derivative used primarily for short-term management of insomnia and certain seizure disorders. It acts as a sedative-hypnotic by enhancing the effect of GABA at the GABA-A receptor, producing calming, muscle-relaxant, and anticonvulsant effects. Due to its high risk of dependence, it is recommended only for limited duration under strict medical supervision.

Mechanism

Nitrazepam enhances the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA at the GABA-A receptor, leading to increased chloride ion influx and neuronal hyperpolarization. This produces sedative, hypnotic, muscle relaxant, and anticonvulsant effects. It reduces sleep latency and increases total sleep time.
