Levofloxacin + Ornidazole

Tablet

Combination medicine used to treat bacterial and protozoal infections. Levofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic, while Ornidazole is an antiprotozoal and antibacterial agent.

Mechanism

Levofloxacin inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase, preventing replication. Ornidazole disrupts DNA synthesis in protozoa and anaerobic bacteria, leading to cell death.

Pharmacokinetics

  • Absorption: Rapid oral absorption.
  • Distribution: Wide tissue penetration.
  • Metabolism: Hepatic metabolism (Ornidazole); minimal metabolism for Levofloxacin.
  • Elimination: Renal excretion.
  • Half-life: Levofloxacin ~6–8 hrs; Ornidazole ~12–14 hrs.

Side Effects

  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
  • Dizziness, headache
  • Metallic taste
  • Rare: tendon rupture (Levofloxacin), seizures (Ornidazole)

Contraindication

  • Hypersensitivity to fluoroquinolones or nitroimidazoles

Interaction

  • Antacids (reduce levofloxacin absorption)
  • Warfarin (increased bleeding risk)
