Mechanism

Lacosamide selectively enhances slow inactivation of voltage-gated sodium channels, stabilizing neuronal membranes and reducing repetitive firing.

Pharmacokinetics

  • Absorption: Rapidly absorbed after oral administration.
  • Bioavailability: ~100%.
  • Metabolism: Partially metabolized in liver.
  • Excretion: Mainly via urine.
  • Half-life: ~13 hours.

Side Effects

  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Diplopia (double vision)
  • Fatigue

Contraindication

  • Hypersensitivity to Lacosamide

Interaction

  • Other antiepileptic drugs (possible additive effects)
  • CYP enzyme inducers/inhibitors (may alter metabolism)
  • Cardiac medications (risk of conduction abnormalities)

Warning and Precautions

  • Monitor ECG in patients with cardiac disease
  • Use cautiously in elderly patients
  • Do not discontinue abruptly (risk of seizure recurrence)
  • Use under medical supervision only
