Ivermectin

Tablet

Ivermectin is a broad‑spectrum antiparasitic agent used in the treatment of helminthic and ectoparasitic infections. It works by binding to glutamate‑gated chloride channels in parasite nerve and muscle cells, causing paralysis and death of the parasite.

Strength
  • 12 mg
Packing Size
  • 10 Tablets

Mechanism

Ivermectin binds selectively to glutamate‑gated chloride ion channels in invertebrate nerve and muscle cells. This increases membrane permeability to chloride ions, leading to hyperpolarization, paralysis, and death of the parasite.

Pharmacokinetics

  • Absorption: Oral absorption enhanced with fatty meals; peak plasma concentration in ~4 hours.
  • Distribution: Widely distributed; does not significantly cross the blood‑brain barrier.
  • Metabolism: Hepatic metabolism via CYP3A4.
  • Excretion: Primarily excreted in feces; minimal renal excretion.
  • Half-life: ~12–36 hours.

Side Effects

  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Abdominal pain
  • Skin rash
  • Rare: elevated liver enzymes

Contraindication

  • Hypersensitivity to Ivermectin
  • Children under 2 years (safety not established)
  • Pregnancy (use with caution)
  • Severe hepatic impairment

Interaction

  • Other antiparasitic agents (additive toxicity)
  • CYP3A4 inhibitors (increase plasma levels)
  • Warfarin (possible increased anticoagulant effect)

Warning and Precautions

  • Use under medical supervision only
  • Monitor liver function in long‑term therapy
  • Ensure adequate hydration

Dosage

As directed by the Physician.
