Balofloxacin

Tablet

Cisapride is a prokinetic agent used to enhance gastrointestinal motility. It increases acetylcholine release in the enteric nervous system, improving esophageal clearance and gastric emptying. Due to cardiac risks, its use is restricted and requires strict medical supervision.

Mechanism

Balofloxacin inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, preventing DNA replication and transcription. This leads to bacterial cell death and effective infection control.

Pharmacokinetics

  • Absorption: Rapidly absorbed orally.
  • Distribution: Widely distributed in tissues.
  • Metabolism: Minimal hepatic metabolism.
  • Elimination: Primarily renal excretion.
  • Half-life: ~7–8 hours.

  • Photosensitivity
  • QT prolongation (cardiac risk)
  • Tendonitis or tendon rupture (rare)

Contraindication

  • Hypersensitivity to fluoroquinolones

Interaction

  • Antacids, iron, zinc (reduce absorption)
  • Antiarrhythmic drugs (QT prolongation)
  • NSAIDs (risk of seizures)
  • Warfarin (increased anticoagulant effect)
