Mechanism

Atenolol selectively blocks beta-1 adrenergic receptors in the heart, reducing sympathetic stimulation, heart rate, and myocardial oxygen demand.

Pharmacokinetics

Absorption: Well absorbed orally.
Metabolism: Minimal hepatic metabolism.
Excretion: Primarily via kidneys.
Half-life: ~6–7 hours.

Contraindication

Hypersensitivity to atenolol
Severe bradycardia
Heart block greater than first degree
Cardiogenic shock

NSAIDs (may reduce antihypertensive effect)

Warning and Precautions

Use cautiously in patients with asthma or COPD
Monitor renal function in long-term therapy
Do not discontinue abruptly (risk of rebound hypertension/angina)
Not recommended during pregnancy unless essential
