Mechanism

Amantadine increases dopamine release and inhibits dopamine reuptake in the brain, improving motor symptoms in Parkinson’s disease. As an antiviral, it blocks the M2 ion channel of influenza A virus, preventing viral replication.

Absorption: Well absorbed orally.
Distribution: Widely distributed; crosses blood-brain barrier.
Metabolism: Minimal hepatic metabolism.
Elimination: Excreted unchanged in urine.
Half-life: Approximately 10–15 hours.
