Mechanism

Xylometazoline
Acts as an alpha-adrenergic agonist, causing vasoconstriction of nasal blood vessels, thereby reducing mucosal swelling and relieving nasal congestion.

Side Effects

  • Mild nasal irritation or dryness
  • Sneezing

Contraindication

  • Hypersensitivity to Xylometazoline
  • Infants below recommended age (unless prescribed)

Dosage

  • 1 spray in each nostril 1–2 times daily
  • Or as directed by the physician.

DRUG INTERACTIONS

  • MAO inhibitors: May increase risk of hypertension
  • Tricyclic antidepressants: May enhance vasoconstrictive effect

Warning and Precautions

  • For nasal use only
  • Do not use for more than 5–7 days (risk of rebound congestion)
  • Avoid contact with eyes
  • Use with caution in patients with hypertension, diabetes, or thyroid disorders
  • Not recommended for prolonged use
  • Store in a cool, dry place
  • Keep out of reach of children
