Pancreatin Minimicrospheres

Capsule

Pancreatin Minimicrospheres Capsule 300 mg is an oral pancreatic enzyme replacement preparation containing pancreatin in gastro-resistant minimicrosphere form. Pancreatin is a mixture of digestive enzymes, principally lipase, amylase and protease, which normally originate from the exocrine pancreas. The minimicrosphere formulation is designed to protect the enzymes from inactivation by gastric conditions and facilitate their release in the gastrointestinal tract, where they contribute to the digestion of dietary fats, carbohydrates and proteins. The product is indicated for pancreatic exocrine insufficiency, where inadequate endogenous pancreatic enzyme secretion can result in impaired digestion and absorption of nutrients. The exact enzyme potency and approved indication should be stated according to the specific product's approved composition and prescribing information.

Mechanism

Pancreatin provides a combination of pancreatic digestive enzymes, primarily lipase, amylase and protease. Lipase hydrolyses dietary triglycerides into absorbable fatty acids and monoglycerides, while amylase contributes to the breakdown of dietary starch and other carbohydrates. Proteases hydrolyse dietary proteins into smaller peptides and amino acids. The minimicrospheres are gastro-resistant, allowing the enzymes to pass through the stomach and become available in the gastrointestinal tract for digestion. By supplying pancreatic enzymes that may be deficient in pancreatic exocrine insufficiency, the formulation supports the normal digestive breakdown and absorption of dietary nutrients.
