Erdosteine

Capsule

Erdosteine 300 mg Capsules contain erdosteine, a mucolytic agent used to help reduce the viscosity of thick respiratory mucus and facilitate its clearance from the airways. Erdosteine is a prodrug that is metabolised to an active metabolite containing a free thiol group. This active metabolite acts on disulphide bonds within bronchial mucoproteins, contributing to the reduction of mucus viscosity and supporting expectoration. Erdosteine also possesses antioxidant properties and has been shown to influence bacterial adhesion to respiratory epithelial cells in pharmacological studies. The 300 mg capsule is an oral pharmaceutical dosage form intended for use according to the prescribing information and under appropriate medical supervision.

Mechanism

Erdosteine is administered as a prodrug and undergoes first-pass metabolism to form its pharmacologically active metabolite, which contains a free thiol group. The active metabolite acts on disulphide bonds present in bronchial mucoproteins, thereby reducing the viscosity and adhesiveness of thick mucus and facilitating its clearance through expectoration. Erdosteine has also demonstrated antioxidant activity related to its active thiol-containing metabolite and has been shown in pharmacological studies to inhibit bacterial adhesion to respiratory epithelial cells. These actions contribute to its mucolytic and expectorant effects.
