Cefpodoxime

Tablet

Cefpodoxime is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections. It is effective against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms. Mechanism

Cefpodoxime inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs). This disrupts the formation of the bacterial cell wall, leading to cell lysis and death. It is bactericidal in nature and effective against a wide range of pathogens.

Pharmacokinetics

  • Absorption: Well absorbed orally (enhanced with food)
  • Distribution: Widely distributed in body tissues
  • Metabolism: Minimal metabolism
  • Elimination: Primarily excreted via urine
  • Half-life: Approximately 2–3 hours

Side Effects

  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Allergic reactions (rash, itching)

Contraindication

  • Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins
  • Severe allergy to penicillin (cross-reactivity risk)

Interaction

  • Antacids (reduce absorption)
  • Probenecid (increases drug levels)
  • Nephrotoxic drugs (increase kidney risk)

Warning and Precautions

  • Use cautiously in renal impairment
  • Complete full antibiotic course
  • Monitor for allergic reactions
