Cefpodoxime + Dicloxacillin

Tablet

Cefpodoxime and Dicloxacillin is a dual antibiotic combination that provides enhanced antibacterial coverage against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms. Cefpodoxime, a third-generation cephalosporin, inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis, while Dicloxacillin, a penicillinase-resistant penicillin, is highly effective against penicillin-resistant staphylococci. This combination is particularly useful in treating skin, respiratory, and mixed bacterial infections, ensuring faster recovery and improved clinical outcomes.

Mechanism

Cefpodoxime inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to bacterial cell death. Dicloxacillin resists degradation by beta-lactamase enzymes produced by resistant bacteria and also inhibits cell wall synthesis. Together, they provide synergistic bactericidal activity, especially against beta-lactamase producing organisms and mixed infections.

Pharmacokinetics

  • Absorption: Well absorbed orally (better with food)
  • Distribution: Good tissue penetration
  • Metabolism: Partial hepatic metabolism
  • Elimination: Mainly via kidneys
  • Half-life: Cefpodoxime ~2–3 hrs, Dicloxacillin ~1–2 hrs
