Mechanism:
Sodium picosulfate is a stimulant laxative that in conjunction with magnesium citrate, produces a purgative effect on stools. Sodium picosulfate inhibits the absorption of water and electrolytes, and increases their secretion into the intestinal lumen. It is hydrolyzed by colonic bacterial enzyme, sulfatase, to form an active metabolite bis-(p-hydroxy-phenyl)-pyridyl-2-methane (BHPM), which acts directly on the colonic mucosa to stimulate colonic peristalsis.
Side Effects:
The product is possible safe for most adults. There is no disadvantage associated with the product if taken under the recommended usage however severe electrolyte disturbances, dehydration, hypovolemia and nausea can occur in some patients.
Interactions:
Digoxin, iron, tetracycline antibiotics, quinolone antibiotics such as ciprofloxacin/levofloxacin, chlorpromazine, penicillamine can interact with sodium picosulfate.
Contraindications:
The formulation should not be used in the following conditions:
● Ileus
● Gastrointestinal obstruction, ulceration or perforation
● Acute abdominal surgical conditions including appendicitis
●Acute inflammatory bowel diseases
Precautions & Warnings:
Sodium picosulphate should be cautiously used in children less than ten years of age, patients with intestinal obstruction, inflammatory bowel syndrome, paralytic ileus, dehydration, appendicitis, nausea or vomiting.
